Backyard Composting
Benefits of Backyard Composting Home composting is an effective and efficient way to dramatically reduce your waste stream at home, while doing your part to reduce your carbon footprint. Organic material sent to the landfill creates methane, a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to the negative impacts of our changing climate. By making compost, you are creating a valuable soil amendment that you can use to benefit your landscape, boost plant growth and reduce carbon emissions. Many types of food waste and yard waste can be composted at home, including grass clippings, tree and shrub trimmings, vegetable garden and fruit tree waste, lawn clippings, autumn leaves, coffee grounds, and fruit and vegetable scraps from the kitchen. Home composters should not attempt to compost meat, dairy or large amounts of baked goods. Home composting can be done in an enclosed bin or tumbler, in an easily made bunker, or using a no-fuss pile. The key is to blend your feedstocks to achieve a balance of carbon and nitrogen, keep things damp but not saturated, and ensure adequate oxygen deep in the pile. The microbes will do the rest.
Compost Bins Available The City of Rialto sells compost bins at a cost that include free instructions and printed materials to anyone interested in learning how to make this nutrient-rich soil amendment. A properly managed compost pile DOES NOT SMELL BAD! The materials should smell like fresh earth and a bin can be easy to care for. It only takes about 15 minutes a week. If you are interested in buying a compost bin for your home, call (909) 421-7222.
Getting Started Step 1 Make your own compost bin or obtain a bin from the City of Rialto. Step 2 Mix two parts brown (dry leaves, small twigs, straw, etc.) with one part green (grass clippings, kitchen scraps, etc.). This 2:1 ratio provides the best mix of carbon (brown materials) to nitrogen (greens). Step 3 Chop or break up many twigs and large pieces of fruit and vegetable waste. Step 4 Keep it moist. Water your compost to keep it moist. Step 5 Keep turning it. Compost needs air. Turning the compost will help it break down and will prevent it from smelling unpleasant.
When it is ready, your compost should look and smell like soil. Use your compost to feed your garden, flowers, potted plants and lawn.

Safe Routes to School
Parent’s Role in Keeping Children Safe As a parent/guardian, you know that your children are always watching and learning from you. Parents/ guardians are the most important role models in a child’s life. This is just as true when it comes to safe walking as it is with anything else. By modeling safe walking habits when you are out walking with your child/children, it could lead to increased safe behaviors and decreases in walking-related deaths and injuries. Remember every step you take is a teachable moment. With your safe walking habits as a guideline, your child/children will be on their way to forming safe walking habits for themselves.
Here are a few basic safety behaviors you can role model for your child/children:
BE AWARE
EYES ON THE DRIVER
CROSS CAREFULLY
Engage your child by pointing out different hazards and obstacles and discuss safe actions to take.
Make eye contact with drivers (or people bicycling, riding scooters, etc.) at the intersections before stepping off the curb. Explain to your child/children to do the same.
Stop, look all four ways and listen before crossing streets, driveways, alleyways and parking lot entrances and have your child/children do this with you.
STEP TO THE SIDE If you have to call or text, move out of the way of others and stop on the sidewalk in a safe place.
FOLLOW THE LAW Obey the traffic signs and signals at all times.
CHOOSE YOUR ROUTE
MUSIC OFF Do not walk with headphones or earbuds in your ears.
yourrialto.com
Plan and discuss the safest route to school or
PHONE AWAY Never text or talk on the phone when you are walking.
For more information contact Safe Moves at: (909) 745-5133 or [email protected]
18
While driving, practice safe behaviors when your children are in the car by making sure to:
FOLLOW THE LAW
GO WITH THE FLOW
Drive the speed limit and obey all traffic signs.
Obey school drop-off and pick-up procedures.
Safe Routes to School
Parent’s Role in Keeping Children Safe
LOOK BEHIND YOU
STOP FOR PEOPLE
PARK LEGALLY
Yield to all people using the crosswalks.
Don’t double park, stop in crosswalks or park in residents’ driveways or teacher parking lots.
Watch for children walking to school when backing out of a driveway or a parking spot.
STAY FOCUSED
GIVE RESPECT, GET RESPECT
Limit distractions while driving, including your phone, food, make-up and interactions with passengers.
Be respectful to other people driving, bicycling and walking.

Safe Routes to School
Summertime Traffic Safety
During the summer children are out of school and will be more active in their neighborhoods, so we need to be extra cautious of our young bike riders. Summer Safety Tips for Drivers: • Be alert, especially in residential areas. • Expect the unexpected. • Obey all laws. • Be predictable. • Double-check behind you and around you when backing out of a driveway or parking space. • Don’t be distracted.
Bike riding is a lot of fun, it great exercise, but crashes happen. Important things you can do to keep your child safe are: • Have your child wear a helmet every time he or she rides a bike—no exceptions. Wearing a helmet that fits well every time you’re on a bike helps protect their face, head, and brain if they fall down. Just like the bike they ride, it should be the right size and not one the “will grow into.” • Teach your child the rules of the road to keep him or her safe while riding. • Make sure your child’s bike is kept in good working order. • Teach your child safe control of the bicycle. Both hands should be kept on the bike’s handlebars. Books and other items should be carried in a backpack or a basket. And only one person should ride a bike at a time—no exceptions.
yourrialto.com
• Make sure your child never wears headphones while bicycling. Your child needs to be able to hear oncoming traffic.
