Summer has arrived; no matter that spring made only a brief, but colorful appearance this year. Memorial Day weekend, the “official” kick-off to the season, was a great success. Despite the record high heat, the pool, the new Porch Bar, the tennis courts and the golf course were all hopping. We are particularly grateful for the efforts of Bob White, Tom Skoglund, Bill Larson and all of their dedicated teams for preparing and staffing the Club campus on a banner Memorial Day weekend. Almost 600 rounds of golf were played and over 1,500 members enjoyed the pool.
If you have been on the golf course in the last couple of weeks, you have no doubt seen the work underway near the 12th and 13th holes. Our course architect, Jeff Mingay was on site working with Bill Larson and his crew to continue the restoration work on this very special property. These efforts received national exposure in Golf Course Architecture just this week. I recommend we all take a few minutes to read this article as it will certainly help us appreciate the “very unique, beautiful property on the bluffs adjacent to the Mississippi River, featuring stunning views of downtown Minneapolis.” This article is located on Page 7-8.
I hope you will all join me in welcoming the fifty-six new families who became members of our club during the “Spring into Action” promotion. There is a reception planned for our new members on Friday June 8 from 5:30 – 7 pm on the upper patio. Please stop in to meet our new friends and give them a warm Town & Country greeting. While the spring promotion has concluded, we are still actively recruiting new members at the corporate and associate levels, so see Tregg Hagen or Bob White if you have a potential member you would like to refer.
Your Board of Directors and numerous governance committees meet monthly as we continue to move Town & Country Club forward. The chairs and members of the committees are posted on the website under My Club > Governance & Bylaws. If you have a comment, a programming idea or any other feedback, please feel free to contact any Board or committee member.
This is a very exciting time at Town & Country. I look forward to seeing you all around the Club this summer.

Summer arrived with a bang on Memorial Day weekend with weather in the 90’s and even reaching 100 on Sunday. It was a wonderful weekend: we had a “Pop-Up” Pool Party on Friday; the attendance was wonderful and everyone enjoyed the new Porch Bar. On Saturday, we checked in 520 people at the pool, which I was told was the most ever in the past two years. The Memorial Day Pool Party was a hit as well. We were able to get most of our guests served before the storms hit. If you have not visited the Porch Bar come down and enjoy a cocktail while looking at the river and watching the sunset.
We have had a terrific response to our
2018 Spring Into Action
membership drive and I would like to point out
a few topics and reminders to our new members.
1. Tipping Policy: On all Food & Beverage tickets there is a service charge of 18% automatically charged that is billed to the member. The Service Charge is Club property. The Club gifts staff in direct service roles 65% of the service charge. This amount is placed in a pool and divided amongst the staff by hours worked. You will also notice an additional line on the ticket, that reads "Additional Server Gratuity" and that goes directly to your server or bartender. As I said in previous correspondence, this is totally optional, and please do not feel obligated to add anything on the tickets. We only added this line to make it easier for members to leave additional gratuities for EXCELLENT SERVICE. Please do not reward mediocre service because we want our servers to be attentive and give great service.
2. Junior Members (Children) a. Children of members are defined as unmarried children until their 26th birth date, regardless of school status. b. Children (under the age of 21) may sit at dining tables in the Bars before 5pm. After 5pm, they may do the same when accompanied by an adult. Minors (under the age of 21) are prohibited from sitting at the bar stools. Only those of legal drinking age may sit at the bar. c. All children 11 years of age and younger MUST be accompanied on the practice putting green surface by a supervising adult and the children must be practicing while on the practice putting green, or chipping from adjacent rough.
3. Summer Parking
a. At Town & Country Club parking is a premium during the summer months with golf, pool, tennis and events the parking lot get full rather quickly. We ask if at all possible to car pool with your family or friends to alleviate some of the parking congestion.
Remember to make plans for the
3rd of July Fireworks Celebration .
This is one event you will not want to
miss. As always if you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me any time. I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing summer.

The Pro Shop Now that the long winter and short spring has given way to summer, we are in gear for an exciting season. Match play events are beginning, Men’s League is underway, Guest Days are scheduled, and we are busy with Junior Golf. For our new members, WELCOME! This month’s newsletter brings you details on our upcoming June golf events at T&C.
June marks the beginning of our match play events at T&C. The Men’s Club Championship, Sr. Club Championship and President’s Cup are all underway. Brackets are posted and periodic emails will be going out to keep everyone informed of their results, upcoming matches and deadlines. Brackets are posted in the locker room hallway. Please check them often and contact your match play opponents at your earliest convenience to schedule. Good luck!
Please watch for our Sunday e-mails that will keep you informed of “What’s Happening” in golf each week!
TEE TIMES / DAILY COURSE OPENING Please remember to make t-times at T&C. By making a t-time we know who is coming and we can have your clubs ready for you before you arrive.
Just a reminder for everyone, the golf course opens at
7:30am .
The main reason is that the City of St. Paul
has a noise ordinance that requires no machinery noise before 7am. Bill and his staff have been very creative in order to prepare the course without too many neighbor complaints. There is an incredible amount of work that needs to be done to prepare the course for the day. Please make note of this and schedule your rounds accordingly.
Putting Green For those of you who bring young children and have dinner on the patio….Please keep an eye on your children as the putting green is not a playground. Running on the green can cause significant damage which may take a long time to repair.
Hazardous Weather With all of the different kinds of weather we have had, we thought we would remind you of our hazardous weather policy at T&C.
We currently have a siren system mounted on top of the Maintenance facility as well as the bathrooms on the golf course which can be sounded with the use of an app from a staff member’s phone. The sound produced from the siren sounds similar to a car alarm. With all of the hills/valleys, the horn may not be heard from all locations on the course. When thinking about inclimate weather a good rule for everyone is: "If you can see it (lightning), flee it; if you can hear it (thunder), clear it." As many of you know, most of the time a staff member will come on the course and warn that bad weather is in the area and to be on the watch. If you find yourself stuck on the golf course in a storm, the staff WILL NOT come out to get you.

Restoration Work Continues at Town & Country Club Town & Country Club in Saint Paul, USA, is continuing to make progress on a long-term restoration project, following a master plan created by golf course architect Jeff Mingay.
The club played host to the first ever round of golf in Minnesota in 1893, and the course occupies the same location today. Mingay said: “It’s a very unique, beautiful property on the bluffs adjacent to the Mississippi River, featuring stunning views of downtown Minneapolis.”
The project, which has been in progress for three years and Mingay expects to last at least three more, aims to enhance the distinctiveness of a club which has many interesting features, such as back-to-back par threes at the second and third holes, and a closing four-hole stretch that comprises three par fives followed by a par three eighteenth hole.
Work includes improving teeing areas by adding length where available and forward tees; adjusting fairway mowing patterns, simplifying lines and adding width; removing trees; and restoring the original sizes and shapes of green surfaces. “This has reintroduced some interesting pin positions and, in turn, presents more variety day-to-day throughout the golf course,” said Mingay.
“Obviously, the golf course and features of the property have evolved significantly over the past 125 years,” said Mingay. “Most important in this process, we’re ensuring that the golf course continues to function properly and can be maintained agronomically up to contemporary expectations, and at the same time using this opportunity to also restore an architectural character that’s consistent with the club’s unique history and design pedigree.”
7
Tree removal has been met with some opposition. “Town & Country Club was originally routed through an indigenous oak savannah,” said Mingay. “In its early days, the course featured beautiful stands of native oak and other indigenous specimens complemented by open space that presented awesome views across a beautiful, rolling property. Superintendent Bill Larson, who’s been at T&C for over two decades, has been restoring this character by removing declining, damaged and diseased trees, along with non-indigenous plants, over the past few years, to great effect. Many long-time members are simply used to T&C being a heavily treed golf course. But, T&C was only heavily treed over the past four or five decades, or so. Remember, the course is 125 years old. For most of its history it was comparatively open, featuring native species.”
The tree removal has also benefitted turf health, said Mingay, by increasing the course’s exposure to sunlight and wind, and eliminating root competition.
Mingay is keen to restore some of the uniqueness that has been masked over the years. For example, he is restoring a green from the original 1893 six-hole course. “This green was existing – it’s all there – among a grove of trees that’s been removed. It’s about 140 yards off the back tee at the current par-five sixth hole. The idea is to present a fun option to play to this green as a nineteenth, or betting hole, from those tees at the sixth. You can drive at the par five sixth, then play ‘Little Six’, as some members are calling it, before continuing with your round.”
All work is being handled by Mingay, Larson and his golf course maintenance team.
