Gompertz, London 1980, p. 120 See also an identical Yaozhou celadon-glazed incense burner from Shanxi Historical Museum. 北宋 耀州窑⻘釉印花五⾜炉 耀州窑在宋代时北⽅的⻘釉瓷窑场中最负盛名，堪称翘楚。胎薄质坚，釉⾯光洁匀静，⾊泽⻘幽，呈半透明状，⼗分淡 雅。装饰有刻花、印花，结构严谨丰满，线条⾃由流畅。 可参考⼀件类似的北宋⻘釉花卉纹碗及底座，⻅《中国⻘釉瓷器》，G. 068 FROM A LONDON PRIVATE COLLECTION A carved Longquan Celadon Hot Water Bowl, Early Ming Dynasty D：20cm，H：8.8cm（without stand） H ：14.5cm（with stand） A comparable but smaller early Ming Longquan warming bowl, zhuge wan, from the Cunliffe Collection (no. PM132), was sold at Bonhams New Bond Street, 12 May 2016, lot 33， another similar one sold at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 18 December 2020, Lot 1011. For a similarly decorated celadon bowl in Longquan Museum, see Longquan Celadon Porcelains, Taipei Artists Publishing, 1998, p.110, fig.72 明早期 ⻰泉窑⻘釉诸葛碗 此品双层碗壁，碗腹中空，外⾜底有⼀圆孔相通，构思巧妙，敞⼝、厚唇、浅弧底、弧壁、卧圈⾜，外壁剔刻花卉纹。 整体施⻘釉，釉质肥厚，呈⾊⻘翠，底⾜露胎。 诸葛碗，⼜名孔明碗，起源于北宋⻰泉窑，其最⼤特点是由两只碗上下粘结⽽成，两碗中间留空，外⾯碗底⼼由⼀圆孔 相通，⼈们便因这个“孔”⽽将其美称为“孔明碗”，孔明先⽣姓诸葛，因⽽⼜称“诸葛碗”。亦有说法此碗为诸葛亮为诈敌⽽ 制。此类器形以往有称“暖碗“，认为可通过碗外底的圆孔注⼊热⽔，温热碗内⻝物。 参阅：《⻰泉窑⻘瓷》，台北艺术家出版社，1998年，⻚110，图72，⻰泉博物馆藏 伦敦邦瀚斯，2016年5⽉12⽇，编号33 £1500 -2000

Donnelly illustrates several figures of Guanyin bearing the seal mark of He Chaozong, including one seated on a rock plinth above waves, pl. 144B ,which has similar hair and jewellery. A good Rhinoceros Horn landscape Libation Cup, 17th/18th century H：8.3cm，L：15.2cm，W：9.5cm the dark honey coloured body well carved with a continuous scene of boatmen on a mountain river among cliffs, and scholars looking on from the shore, the pierced openwork handle in the form of a gnarled pine, whose branches extend over into the interior of the vessel. The landscape with water is a classic subject in rhino horn carving. For example, Jan Chapman illustrates a larger similar libation cup in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, in 'The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China', London 1999,pp.94/95,ill.77, and also on the front cover, which is also carved with a naturalistic double handle incorporating a pine See Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 October 2014, lot 3793

This unusual design of sea creatures among waves first appeared in the Imperial wares of the Xuande and Chenghua period, and was revived in late Ming and Qing. A cup and saucer showing the same subject with a scroll border is illustrated in J. Welsh, 'European scenes on Chinese Art', London 2005, catalogue no. 62, where the author suggests that the coral and peacock feathers in the vase both convey a wish for high official rank in China, but agrees that the meaning of the scene is a mystery. 306 A Finely Painted Blue and White 'Neptune' Soup Plate, Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty D: 23.2cm Pencilled in the center with Neptune in a chariot pulled by dolphins, waving his trident to calm the waves, attended by mermen and sea nymphs. This beautiful classical subject soup plate is an example from a group of very refined pencilled blue and white 'Chine de commande' wares that were produced in the mid Qianlong period. These are particularly impressive. 'Famille rose chine de commande' wares would have been enamelled at Canton, near the European East India Company factories, and thus under easy supervision. However, the patterns for underglaze blue wares would have to be sent across country to Jingdezhen, a far slower process. At the factory in Jingdezhen the potters and painters were on their own. Cultural misinterpretations of the design or poor quality work could not be quickly rectified, so this is a doubly impressive achievement. The potters were almost certainly working from an engraving by the Dutch artist Frederick Bloemeart (1610-1669),reproducing an earlier drawing by his father Abraham, which is now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, as pointed out by Le Corbeillier, in 'China Trade Porcelain-Patterns of Exchange', New York, 1974,no.28,which also shows a plate from the service. The subject may derive from Virgil in the Aeneid, book l, lines 124 to 143,where Neptune calms the waves with his trident, after the goddess Juno had let loose a storm in order to harm the retreating Trojan army. 清乾隆 ⻘花⻄洋⼈物图盘 £1000-2000
